Mathematics formula sheet
The same formulas that are provided on the GED Mathematical Reasoning test. Anything not listed here (for example, area of a rectangle or a triangle’s angle sum) you are expected to know.
Area
| Parallelogram | A = bh |
| Trapezoid | A = ½ h (b1 + b2) |
Surface area and volume
| Rectangular / right prism | SA = ph + 2B V = Bh |
| Cylinder | SA = 2πrh + 2πr² V = πr²h |
| Pyramid | SA = ½ ps + B V = ⅓ Bh |
| Cone | SA = πrs + πr² V = ⅓ πr²h |
| Sphere | SA = 4πr² V = 4⁄3 πr³ |
| p = perimeter of base B; s = slant height; π ≈ 3.14 |
Algebra
| Slope of a line | m = (y2 − y1) / (x2 − x1) |
| Slope-intercept form | y = mx + b |
| Point-slope form | y − y1 = m(x − x1) |
| Standard form of a quadratic | y = ax² + bx + c |
| Quadratic formula | x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a |
| Pythagorean theorem | a² + b² = c² |
| Simple interest | I = Prt (I = interest, P = principal, r = rate, t = time) |
| Distance formula | d = rt |
| Total cost | total cost = (number of units) × (price per unit) |
Data
| Mean | Sum of the values divided by the number of values |
| Median | Middle value of an ordered list (or the mean of the two middle values) |
Not on the sheet but expected: perimeter and area of rectangles, squares, triangles (A = ½bh) and circles (A = πr², C = 2πr); percent = part ÷ whole; distance and midpoint on the coordinate plane; compound interest A = P(1 + r/n)nt.
